What Did Jesus Truly Accomplish?

Most Christians celebrate Easter by reflecting on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ with greater intensity than at any other time of the year. But why does an event from two millennia ago remain so vital for us today? What did Jesus truly accomplish through His sacrifice?

The Cross was the ultimate solution to the problem of sin, answering the vital question of how mankind could be restored to the image of God. Because justice required a price for sin, a Saviour was needed to pay that debt.

While Satan’s primary accusation was that God could not be just and loving at the same time, Jesus proved that these two attributes are perfectly harmonious. Through His sacrifice, He restored what was lost in the Garden of Eden — a victory that began in a different garden, the Garden of Gethsemane, where He accepted God’s plan for the salvation of humanity.

Through His sacrifice, Jesus addressed the human condition in three profound ways:

  1. Revelation of God’s character. The Cross provides the ultimate proof of God’s love and justice, serving as the center of the Christian faith and our only hope of salvation.
  2. Substitution. Jesus endured the full extent of God’s justice against sin in our place. By taking our debt upon Himself, He restored our standing before the Father.
  3. Restoration of dominion. He broke the chains of sin and death, reclaiming the dominion over the world that humanity had forfeited.

Ellen White encourages believers to dedicate a “thoughtful hour” each day to contemplate the closing scenes of Jesus’ life. By fixing our eyes on His sacrifice, we allow the reality of His grace to refine our character and renew our hope.
